Description

Wildflowers and Watersheds at Tolay Creek Ranch

Sonoma Land Trust is leading a collaborative effort to restore the severely degraded Tolay Creek. Working with our rancher, community groups, and with the help of thousands of school children and volunteers, we are planting miles of native trees and shrubs, repairing stream banks, and changing how we manage the cattle. Come join stewardship director Bob Neale for a tour of Tolay Creek and learn about this exciting project and restoration techniques we are using. We will also take a hike up to the top of the ridge and see what wildflowers might be blooming in the serpentine area as we enjoy a scenic picnic lunch.

The acquisition of the 1,665-acre Tolay Creek Ranch in 2007 completed the protection of a habitat corridor extending from the wetlands fringing San Pablo Bay to the foothills of Sonoma Mountain. The Tolay Creek Ranch was one of the last remaining opportunities in the Bay Area to protect a freshwater-to-salt-marsh ecosystem and includes two and a half miles of Tolay Creek, which flows into San Pablo Bay. The property is now permanently protected and our management incorporates cattle grazing, creek restoration and native habitat improvement. It is slated for inclusion into the adjacent Tolay Lake Regional Park in the near future.
